Tameshigiri is the Japanese art of cutting rolled straw mats with a single strike. Each individual tatami mat is said to have a difficulty of cut equal to severing a man’s upper leg and is more difficult than severing a head. The wara used in these videos were purchased from Bugei Trading Company (they are not thin beach mats), and then soaked in water for 36-48 hours prior to the cut. Each wara is approx. 4 ½ inches in diameter when rolled.
