Speaks the Artist Behind Angel Sword Cont. - Part 4 With each sword or knife, Watson seeks to go beyond craftsmanship. He wants to achieve a work of art that inspires a powerful connection in customers. “My approach is to have vision of a piece, to pursue that vision and to make something that will sing when you touch it,” Watson said.
“I’ll take one sword and make it all bright and shiny. And, I’ll make another evil and dark. People will look at them and see one as noble and one as bad. I also want an emotional response,” Watson said. This goal is evident in three complete lines of knives, daggers, swords and other custom blades. Prices vary, depending of the time and materials put into each piece. Knives and daggers range anywhere from $295-$5,000, with most pieces falling between $495 and $2,000. Swords fall into the $1,500-$10,000 prices range, the bulk selling for between $3,000 and $7,000. Avatar knives and daggers are $195-$2,000, typically between $295 and $1,500; and Avatar swords range from $2,000-$10,000, most coming in at $2,000-$6,000. Bright Knights, the most popular line of the company’s swords, knives and daggers, are more moderately priced, ranging from $79-$1,000, typically in the $125-$400 price point. Bright Knight swords reach $595-$5,000, and the bulk are available for $795-$1,500. As the prices suggest, each line aims at different would-be customers. Bright Knights, for example, was developed to offer an affordable, entry-level product that still met Angel Sword’s high quality standards. The line is rich in variety and detail. Exotic hardwoods like cocobolo, cardinal wood and African purple-heart share the limelight with other materials, including horn, brass, bone and bronze. At one time, the company also produced a Buccaneer line of knives and daggers. A few remain but the line has been discontinued. “Production methods vary based on the product line,” Gerrow said. “Angel Swords and Avatars are made using a traditional Catalan forge with a hand bellows and charcoal fire. The Bright Knights begin with stock removal and are finished by hand. While we start off with a variety of commercial steels, it’s important to note that the steel you end up with after forging isn’t the same steel you started with. Forging changes the nature of the steel, often dramatically.” Angel Sword’s artisans are particularly pleased with the options provided them by modern metal technology. This is especially true when it comes to the Avatar line. “Avatar Damascus blades feature our Techno-Wootz Damascus, a technologically advanced blade steel that (we believe) recreates the crystalline properties of the legendary wootz steel of ancient Indo-Persia,” Gerrow said. “The crystalline structure of the steel in Avatar Damascus blades results in beautiful surface patterns that Daniel can manipulate to produce a variety of stunning effects.” Angel Sword feature in 2004 Sporting Knives |
