Angel Sword Cutting Competition Results
Photos from the Contest The old record of 14 tatami mats was surpassed the first day when Elias Felan, using a Bright Knight sword - the "Warlord" - made a clean cut through 16 tatami mats. This set a new record, and Elias mastered the field for the day. His record was short-lived, however, for Sunday saw even more powerful strokes and masterful demonstrations of swordsmanship. The first cut on Sunday nearly broke the record when Steve Miller, also using Warlord, severed 15 tatami mats. Elias' record withstood that challenge, but more serious competition was still ahead. At 3:00 PM, Bruce Baldwin took Warlord in hand and struck a massive blow, cleaving 23 tatami mats and demolishing Elias' day-old record. Stephen Green also made a valiant attempt and succeeded in cutting through 13 mats, before Elias closed out the competition with a final attempt to beat Bruce's record. Alas, though he struck a worthy blow, he didn't match has earlier performance, cutting "only" 13 tatami mats. Thus, at the end of the day, a new champion stepped forward to claim the prize. And the winner is...
A little background...The cutting contest took place November 6-7, 2004 at the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville, near Houston. Angel Sword awarded a prize of $2,000 to the swordsman cutting the most mats with a single strike. The game was heavy cutting only. Bugei wara, individually rolled and soaked from 36 to 48 hours, were arranged in a 3-row staggered formation on a 4-foot-long stand. The competition was open to all styles of sword and swordsmanship, with no sword having an overall length greater than 6 feet. Only completely severed mats were counted.
